More Black Hills touring

We did one more tour of the Black Hills today.... down south again. On the way, we came around one corner and saw this....

Side view of George..... pretty awesome!

Our main objective today was to see the Crazy Horse Memorial.  Oh my goodness, it was amazing!  So much work has been done but so much is left to be done.  This is the current progress.  And they've been at it 50 years or so.  It is a privately funded effort that was actually started by a Polish American sculptor.  Several of his 10 children continue the effort today.

Along with multiple models, he left detailed drawings and instructions as he knew that this would be a multiple lifetime project.  This is a 1/34th scale model of the finished monument.  You can see that the tunnel above is actually just under Crazy Horse's arm.  When they finish his head (with hair), you would be able to fit the entire Mount Rushmore monument within it.  This baby is huge!

While we were at the Crazy Horse center, they had a group of Indian storytellers and dancers.  This was the chief.  I believe his name is Leaping Buffalo.

A back view of his regalia.  He told us that some of the feathers in their ornamentation were over 100 years old!

After we left the Crazy Horse monument, we continued on to Custer City.  And no, we did not go see the Flintstones Bedrock theme park there.  Gotta draw the tourist line somewhere!  :)

We did see several painted buffalo statues on street corners.  This one had the 4 presidents from Rushmore on one side.....

And then a painting of Mount Rushmore on the other.....  along with a painting of Borglum (the creator of Rushmore).  The detail work was amazing!

Lunch was at the Baker Bakery and Cafe in Custer City.

And yes, the hamburger buns were pretty darned good!  :)  As was the whole green chili burger that I had.

We made one more stop in Hill City on the way home.  While we girls were shopping, the guys were hanging out on the patio of the Mangy Moose Saloon.  Alas, no more rings for the girls, but the guys did get a beer!

Now we are back at the rv park and the guys are grilling dinner.  Some excellent steak to go with the wine we got yesterday.

Doesn't get much better than that!
